The Pocket Contemplative

A vibrant, story-filled look at contemporary spirituality that's fun, contemplative, practical and cultural

The Pocket Contemplative includes several different things

  • A podcast

  • Weekly online groups

  • A free, 8-week, introductory class called Faith Part 2

  • Short, weekly articles around these subjects

Podcast

The Pocket Contemplative podcast looks at how historic Christian spiritual practice (often incorporating insights from modern neuroscience and worldwide contemplative practice) helps us navigate life in the modern world. The perspectives it explores have been workshopped in ongoing conversations with people from around the United States and beyond.

One of its central insights has been explored historically (notably with great Christian leaders like Teresa of Avila) and recently (as we explore in brief animated videos): namely, that Christian faith by nature transforms if we continue in it and don’t stagnate. Many of us experience an initial burst of enthusiasm and mentoring in church settings, an enthusiasm which might then hit some roadblocks we didn’t see coming. The historic Christian teachers we explore here look in some depth at what can come after these roadblocks, how they not only are by no means final but can open a door into a richness of faith we could not have experienced without taking this journey.

Weekly online groups

We host three weekly online groups which discuss ongoing insights along these lines before allowing some time for personal practices and then breaking into smaller groups for ongoing friendship and prayer. If you’d be interested in checking out one of these online groups, email connect@thepocketcontemplative.com and mention which of the groups below interests you.

The three meeting times available are:

  • Mondays at 10am Pacific time

  • Wednesdays at 6pm Pacific time

  • Thursdays at 4pm Pacific time

Faith Part 2 course

What might this transformation we describe above look like in practice? You’ll find an in-depth description of the Faith Part 2 course here.
